This conference will examine the media's role in shaping meaning in contemporary society, drawing on key national and international events, disruptions, and academic research. Discussions will address media's impact on criminal justice, public opinion, social norms, and cultural shifts, as well as debates on deviancy amplification, moral panics, and media portrayals of crime. The conference will also explore the influence of media on popular culture, media activism, and the responses it elicits from society, including specific closed groups.

Conclave Concept

This conference aims to explore the significance of the media and the impact it has on the meaning-making processes in contemporary society. It will draw examples and researches from key national and international events, disruptions, changes and also academic literature and previous studies on the role and functions of the media and its impact on society. This will include key debates on deviancy amplification, folk devils and moral panics and also assess media’s impact on criminal justice policies, public opinion, social mores, cultural changes, communication bottlenecks, Social Media and mediocracy, ideologies and media policies. In particular, it will focus on exploring how the media can influence popular culture and the impact of media portrayals of crime on societal perceptions, impact of media portrayal on societal changes, impact of media activism and its responses and reactions directed towards people in general and certain closed groups in particular.
